How to Switch to Natural Deodorant Without the Dreaded Adjustment Period

aluminum-freeApr 17, 20262 min read

You've heard the horror stories. "I switched to natural deodorant and sweated through everything for two weeks." It doesn't have to go that way. With the right approach, the switch can be smooth — and your body will thank you for it.

Why Switch in the First Place?

Conventional antiperspirants work by plugging your sweat glands with aluminum salts. They stop you from sweating altogether — but sweating is how your body regulates temperature and expels waste. Blocking that process long-term isn't something we should take lightly.

Natural deodorant doesn't stop you from sweating. It neutralizes odor-causing bacteria so you stay fresh without interfering with your body's natural systems.

What Causes the Adjustment Period

When you stop using aluminum-based antiperspirant, your sweat glands start working normally again. This transition typically lasts 2-4 weeks and can involve more sweating than usual. The good news: most people find they sweat and smell less after the transition than they did on conventional antiperspirant.

How to Make the Switch Easier

1. Time it right

Start during a cooler season or a low-activity week.

2. Do an armpit detox

Apply a thin layer of kaolin clay mixed with water to your underarms for 10-15 minutes a few times a week. Our Flora Crème Deodorant contains kaolin clay for exactly this reason.

3. Stay hydrated

More water means more dilute sweat, which means less odor.

4. Reapply as needed

Natural deodorant isn't a 48-hour formula. Apply after showering and reapply mid-day if needed.

5. Wear natural fibers

Linen, cotton, and wool let your skin breathe and make a real difference during the transition.

What to Look for in a Natural Deodorant

Look for baking soda or magnesium to neutralize odor-causing bacteria, absorbent clays or starches to manage moisture, and nourishing butters that soothe rather than irritate. Our Flora Crème Deodorant is formulated with organic shea butter, coconut oil, arrowroot, kaolin clay, and a subtle vanilla-rose scent. No aluminum. No synthetic fragrance.

It's Worth It

The adjustment period is temporary. Give it a month. Your body has been waiting for the chance to breathe.
